    Plona Cupery, 97, formerly of Beaver Creek, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne.

    A funeral service was Saturday, Oct. 20, at Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne with burial at Beaver Creek Cemetery.

    Plona Verhey was born June 4, 1915, to Klaas and Lucretia (VanDis) Verhey on the farm west of Hills in Martin Township. She was raised on the farm and attended country school through the eighth grade. Following her education, she remained on the farm to help her family.

    On April 29, 1937, Plona married Charles Cupery on her parents' farm near Hills. Following their marriage the couple moved to Valley Springs, S.D. She worked as a janitor for the Reformed Church. In early 1942 the family moved to Randolf, Wis. One year later the family moved to Madison, Wis. In November of 1943 Plona and her family moved to Beaver Creek. On Dec. 6, 1943, her husband was drafted and entered the service. During this time Plona and her children moved into a house in Beaver Creek. In 1945 Charles returned from the service. A short time later the couple divorced. Plona continued to provide for and raise their children. She worked at the Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Home in Luverne, at the Beaver Creek school as a janitor, and wallpapered rooms in houses for many people's homes. In June of 2006 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home.

    She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek, where she was a part of Circle and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and crafting and loved listening to Daniel O'Donnell.

    Plona is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Buddi, Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Cornie Verhey, Beaver Creek; a daughter-in-law, Karla Cupery, Fort Collins, Colo.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other family and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Lucy Cupery; a son, John Cupery; a son-in-law, Barry Buddi; three siblings, John, Frank, and Minnie; and a sister-in-law, LaVonne Verhey.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 3, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

    Frank Verhey, 84, Luverne, formerly of Beaver Creek, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Center in Luverne.

    Frank Verhey was born to Klass and Lucretia (Van Dis) Verhey on Feb. 3, 1920, in Martin Township, rural Hills.

    He married Elleda Brekke on June 14, 1947, in Luverne. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Rock County and Minnehaha County, S.D. areas. In 1964, the couple moved to Beaver Creek where they owned and operated The Home Plate Café. They sold the café in 1966 when he went to work at the stockyards in Sioux Falls, S.D. He retired in 1995. The couple moved to Luverne in September 2000.

    Mr. Verhey was a former member of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church in Valley Springs, S.D., and a current member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. He enjoyed hobby farming and helping area farmers in the fields. He also enjoyed sitting in his garage and visiting with neighbors.

    Survivors include his wife, Elleda Verhey, Luverne; one daughter, Fran (Bob) Meester, Luverne; one granddaughter, Missy Meester, Sioux Falls; one brother, Cornie (LaVonne) Verhey, Beaver Creek; one sister, Plona Cupery, Beaver Creek; and many nieces and nephews.

    Mr. Verhey was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John Verhey, and one sister, Minnie Verhey.

    Dingmann Funeral Home, Luverne, is in charge of arrangements.

    CORNELIUS "CORNIE" VERHEY was born to Klaas and Lucretia (Van Dis) Verhey on September 30, 1926 in Rock County, Minnesota. He attended country school through the eighth grade and then went to work on the farm with his dad. Cornie was drafted into the United States Army and served in Germany during the conclusion of World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the service he returned home and began farming. On December 17, 1955 Cornie was united in marriage to Lavonne Bjerk at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, Minnesota. The couple made their home on farms in Beaver Creek Township before moving into Beaver Creek in 1962. Cornie then went to work in construction for five years before becoming a custodian at the Hills-Beaver Creek Elementary School. A few years later, Cornie purchased a semi-truck and began his own trucking company, Verhey Trucking. In 1975, he began working at the Sioux Falls Stockyards in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He worked there until his retirement in 1991. Cornie then went to work part-time at a rest area. Lavonne preceded him in death on June 28, 2010. Cornie continued to reside in their home in Beaver Creek. He remained as active as his body would let him and enjoyed the seasonal tasks of his vegetable gardening. On Thursday, November 19, 2015 Cornie passed away at his home at the age of 89 years, one month and 19 days.

    Cornie had a quiet faith that he shared with a couple of close friends and held with him at the end of his life. He enjoyed caring for his garden, fishing and riding around in his pickup truck. Most all he enjoyed the gift of grandchildren and attending their sporting events and other activities.

    Cornie is lovingly remembered by his three sons, Cornell Verhey of Beaver Creek, Robert and his wife Barb of Luverne, and Rodney and his wife Cami of Hills; nine grandchildren; and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavonne; son, Vincent Verhey; parents, Klaas and Lucretia Verhey; and siblings, John Verhey, Frank Verhey and Plona Cupery.

    Grace Schuurman, age 90 of Rock Rapids, IA died Sunday, May 3, 2015 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids, IA.

    Memorial service will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 7th at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids with Rev. Dan Haggar officiating. Everyone is invited to gather in the fellowship hall for refreshments and a time of sharing following the memorial service.

    Family and friends will be gathering at Jurrens Funeral Home at 12:00 noon on Thursday before proceeding to Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids for a 12:30 PM burial prior to the memorial service.

    Visitation will be Wednesday, May 6th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, with family present at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

    Grace Schuurman was born November 9, 1924 near Rock Rapids to Cornelius and Adreanna (Van Dis) Palsrok. She received her education at a country school near Rock Rapids. On April 8, 1943 she was united in marriage at her parent’s home to John Schuurman. The couple made their home near Rock Rapids, IA where they farmed for many years. To this union a daughter, Hermina, was born. Grace worked beside her husband on the farm as well as caring for her small family. There will be many cherished memories of farm life both by Hermina and their grandchildren. In January of 1986 the two retired and moved to Rock Rapids. Grace was very fond of baking and loved to share her wonderful brownies and chocolate chip cookies with family and friends. Any time there was a kindness done to Grace or John she would bake a batch in loving gratitude and John would hand deliver them. Her family will always remember the favorite applesauce she would bring to family gatherings. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and making dresses for her granddaughters. Grace loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. She will be greatly missed.

    Grace is survived by her husband of 72 years, John Schuurman of Rock Rapids; daughter, Hermina (Don) Borman; granddaughters, Denise (Steve) Boer and Stacy (Steve) Spaans; great-grandchildren, Amanda (fiancé Caleb Van Der Brink) and Abigail Boer, Makinsy and Jordan Brantsen, all of Sioux Center, IA; sister-in-law, Murial Palsrok of Rock Rapids; and many nieces and nephews and other extended family members.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hattie Broesder, Minnie Longnecker, Jennie Stubbe, Pearl Groen and MaryVande Kop; and brother, John Palsrok.

    The Schuurman family prefers memorials be directed to Lyon County Hospice.

    John Palsrok, age 83 of Rock Rapids, IA died Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids.

    Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 at United Methodist Church in Rock Rapids, IA with Pastor Dean Shelly officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery of Rock Rapids, IA.

    Visitation will be Tuesday April 26th from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM with the family present from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, IA.

    John Palsrok was born December 23, 1927 to Cornelius and Adriantje (Van Dis) Palsrok on a farm near Edna, Iowa. The family moved north of Rock Rapids where he attended country school.

    He married Muriel Popma of Sioux Center, Iowa on July 22, 1948. They resided north of Rock Rapids, Iowa. A son, Carl Bruce, was born to them in 1953.

    John farmed and sold seed corn. He was president of the Conservation League and cared for the mini zoo for many years.

    John and Muriel retired to Rock Rapids in 1980. Although retired, he farmed for others for several years. John enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends.

    He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Muriel Palsrok; son, Carl (Geraldine) Palsrok of Sibley, IA; three grandchildren, Theresa (Rodney) Gravel of Wyoming, IA, Carla Palsrok and Clifford Rud and Christopher (Alayne) Palsrok all of Sibley, IA; eleven great-grandchildren; and sister, Grace (John) Schuurman of Rock Rapids, Iowa. John was preceded in death by his parents and six sisters.
